Public Meetings

The U.S. Codex Program is sponsoring a public meeting on September 26, 2018 from 2-4pm to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft United States (U.S.) positions to be discussed at the 24th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Import and Export Inspection and Certification Systems (CCFICS) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), in Brisbane, Australia October 22-26, 2018. The public meeting will take place at USDA in the Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue SW., Room 107-A, Washington, DC 20250. Documents related to the 24th Session of the CCFICS are accessible here: www.codexalimentarius.org/meetings-reports/en.

  • Mary Stanley, U.S. Delegate to the 24th Session of the CCFICS invites U.S. interested parties to submit their comments electronically to the following email address: mary.stanley@fsis.usda.gov.
  • Please register to attend by emailing ken.lowery@osec.usda.gov by September 22, 2018. Early registration is encouraged because it will expedite entry into the building, for which attendees should bring photo identification and plan for adequate time to pass through federal building security screening systems. Attendees who are not able to attend the meeting in person, but who wish to participate, may do so by phone/conference call; please use the call-in-number 1-888-844-9904. The participant code will be posted at: www.fsis.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsis/ topics/international-affairs/us-codex-alimentarius/public-meetings.

The U.S. Codex Program will sponsor additional public meetings in October and November for the following upcoming Codex subsidiary body meetings:

  • Codex Committee on Food Hygiene in November 2018
  • Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses in November 2018
  • Ad hoc Codex Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance in December 2018
  • Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs in January 2019.

Electronic Working Groups (eWGs)

Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV)

Matters Referred on Food Additives: CCPFV invites Members and Observers to join an eWG, chaired by the United States, working in English, to develop responses to matters referred from the Committee on Food Additives (CCFA), including matters from CCFA49 and CCFA50. Individuals in the United States interested in working on the U.S. contributions to the eWG should contact Doreen Chen-Moulec (doreen.chen-moulec@osec.usda.gov) by September 13, 2018. Other countries and Observers should send their full contact details including participant's name, official title or position, organization or country, and email address via their Codex Contact Points (CCP) to uscodex@osec.usda.gov with a copy to yinqing.ma@fda.hhs.gov and dorian.lafond@ams.usda.gov by September 15, 2018. As this eWG will operate on the Codex Online Forum, please note that when there is more than one expert, each country or observer organization shall designate one as their official representative to participate in the eWG.

Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH)

Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/68-CPL) requesting comments at Step 3 on the revision to the Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products (CXC 52-2003) and the revisions on the Section on Sampling, Examination, and Analysis related to histamine safety. The CL is currently available in English at the following link: www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/resources/circular-letters/en. If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response, please send your comments to Barbara McNiff (barbara.mcniff@osec.usda.gov) by October 13, 2018. Comments by other Observers and countries should be submitted through their Codex Contact Points (CCP) using the Online Commenting System (ocs.codexalimentarius.org) by October 15, 2018.

Management of (micro)Biological Foodborne Crises/Outbreaks: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/72/OCS-FH) requesting comments at Step 3 on the proposed draft Guidance for the Management of (micro)Biological Foodborne Crises/Outbreaks. The CL is currently available in English, Spanish, and French at the following link: www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/resources/circular-letters/en. If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response, please send you comments to Barbara McNiff (barbara.mcniff@osec.usda.gov) by October 13, 2018. Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU)

Biofortification: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/65/OCS-FH) requesting comments at Step 3 on the proposed draft definition for biofortification. The CL is currently available in English at the following link: www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/resources/circular-letters/en. If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response, please send your comments to Doreen Chen-Moulec (doreen.chen-moulec@osec.usda.gov) by October 23, 2018. Comments by other Observers and countries should be submitted through their Codex Contact Points (CCP) using the Online Commenting System (ocs.codexalimentarius.org) by October 25, 2018.

Codex Committee on Sugars (CCS)

Non-centrifuged Dehydrated Sugar Cane Juice: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/74-CS) requesting comments at Step 6 on the draft Standard for Non-centrifuged Dehydrated Sugar Cane Juice. The CL is currently available in English at the following link: www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/resources/circular-letters/en. If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response, please send your comments to Rita Kishore (rita.kishore@fsis.usda.gov) by November 28, 2018. Comments by other Observers and countries should be submitted through their Codex Contact Points (CCP) using the Online Commenting System (ocs.codexalimentarius.org) by November 30, 2018.

Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH)

Dried Roots, Rhizomes, and Bulbs: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/55-OCS-CCSCH) requesting comments at Step 3 on the Proposed Draft Standards for Dried roots, rhizomes, and bulbs and specific requirements for dried or dehydrated ginger. The CL is currently available in English, French, and Spanish at the following link: www.fao.org/fao-who-codexalimentarius/resources/circular-letters/en. If you are interested in having your comments considered in the U.S. response, please send your comments to Rita Kishore (rita.kishore@fsis.usda.gov) by October 10, 2018.
