E-News (15 June 2023)

Centre for Food Safety E-news

Dear E-news recipients,

News on the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) website :

https://www.cfs.gov.hk/tc_chi/whatsnew/whatsnew_sfst/whatsnew_sfst_Rice_Dumplings_and_Food_Safety.html

https://www.cfs.gov.hk/tc_chi/press/20230530_10344.html

https://www.cfs.gov.hk/tc_chi/press/20230601_10351.html

(1) Rice Dumplings and Food Safety

It is a Chinese tradition to eat glutinous rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival. In the old days, people used to make glutinous rice dumplings themselves to celebrate the Festival. However, the busy city life drives many people to purchase ready-made ones from restaurants, food shops or supermarkets. The public should pay attention to the safety tips on the purchase, preparation and consumption of glutinous rice dumplings.

(2) CFS Reminds Public to Keep an Eye on Food Safety Risks in Summer

Summer is a high-risk season for foodborne diseases caused by bacteria since the warm weather is conducive to the rapid growth of bacteria. The average temperature in Hong Kong is projected to be higher this year as the climate continues to warm. To this end, the CFS reminded members of the public and food businesses to pay special attention to food safety during the summer.

(3) Harmful Substances in Food (Amendment) Regulation 2021 to Commence

the Harmful Substances in Food (Amendment) Regulation 2021 (the Amendment Regulation) comes into operation in two phases - the provisions stipulating the maximum levels of harmful substances in food have commenced since June 1, 2023 while the provisions relating to specifying partially hydrogenated oils (PHO), the main source of industrially produced trans fatty acids (IP-TFAs), as a prohibited substance in food, and the related marking and labelling requirement will be effective on December 1. The Amendment Regulation enhances the regulation of harmful substances such as industrially produced trans fats and mycotoxins in food with a view to further safeguarding food safety in Hong Kong.

(4) Like Love, Food Safety is No Accident – Practise Five Keys Now!

Foodborne diseases, also known as food poisoning, incur health and economic costs, and many cases of foodborne disease occur due to food safety lapses in food preparation or handling either in food service establishments or at home. Knowledgeable food handlers, including those who prepare food at home, can significantly reduce the chances of causing foodborne diseases and improve public health. This is especially important for people who have increased vulnerability to foodborne diseases.

In support of the theme of the World Food Safety Day on 7 June, the CFS is taking this chance to promote the importance of food safety to food businesses and the public in order to raise awareness of 5 Keys as the best measure in preventing foodborne diseases.

E-News (1 June 2023)

Centre for Food Safety E-news

Dear E-news recipients,

News on the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) website :

https://www.cfs.gov.hk/tc_chi/whatsnew/whatsnew_fstr/whatsnew_fstr_Proposed_Amendments_Preservatives_Food_Regulation.html

 向可靠的供應商採購碘鹽以保持碘鹽供應;

Dear E-news recipients,

News on the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) online:

(1) Public Consultation on Proposed Amendments to the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap. 132BD)

The Government has launched a public consultation on the proposed amendments to the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap. 132BD) (the Regulation). The consultation will last for 3 months, until 28 August 2023.

One of the initiatives set out in the Policy Measures of the Chief Executive's 2022 Policy Address is to review and update by phases the food safety legislation relating to additives in food to further enhance food safety. The first phase covers preservatives and antioxidants in food.

The Government proposes to enhance and update the Regulation, so as to keep local standards of preservatives and antioxidants in food on par with international standards. At the same time, putting more preservatives and antioxidants under regulation would enhance clarity and offer more choices of permitted preservatives and antioxidants applicable to a wide range of food categories to the food trade. It would also enhance consumer protection.

Details of the proposed amendments can be found in the webpage below:
https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/whatsnew/whatsnew_fstr/whatsnew_fstr_Proposed_Amendments_Preservatives_Food_Regulation.html

(2) Improving Public Access to Iodised Salt

Iodine is an essential micronutrient required for thyroid hormone synthesis to support growth and development. Persistently low iodine intake will result in iodine deficiency or even damage to the developing brain and other harmful effects.

Globally, iodised salt (i.e. salt iodised or “fortified” with iodine) has been recognised as the most convenient and most effective vehicle for the administration of supplemental iodine. The addition of iodate or iodide to salt does not affect the taste or smell of the salt or foods containing iodised salt, and therefore consumer acceptability is high

To make iodised salt more accessible to the local population, the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) encourages the trade to consider the following:
• Make iodised salt available to the public by procuring/sourcing it from reliable suppliers;
• Provide proper labelling of iodised salt, such as instructions on its usage to minimise its iodine loss; and
• Include the level of iodine on the label of iodised salt.

To promote the use of iodised salt, the CFS has published a “Practical Guide on Salt Iodisation for Salt Importers, Wholesalers and Retailers”, which can be found on the CFS website through the following link: https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/programme/programme_fii/files/Food_Iodisation_e.pdf

You are encouraged to make reference to the guide’s content when providing iodised salt. Thank you for your support towards increasing the availability of iodised salt in Hong Kong.
