Targeted surveillance on Salmonella in ready-to-eat food

The CFS has recently completed a targeted food surveillance project on Salmonella in ready-to-eat food. Other than two unsatisfactory samples announced earlier, test results of the remaining samples were all satisfactory. The two unsatisfactory samples announced earlier included a sample of rice vermicelli in soup with egg and a sample of chicken with chili sauce. Salmonella can be found in eggs and food of animal origin. There is a risk of contracting salmonellosis if a person consumes undercooked food of animal origin, eggs or egg products, and food cross-contaminated with Salmonella. To ensure food safety, the public should not take the risk lightly and should always maintain good personal and food hygiene.

Risk assessment results on dietary exposure to non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls

The CFS announced the results of a recently completed risk assessment study on dietary exposure of the Hong Kong adult population to non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (NDL-PCBs), which showed that it is unlikely for the local population to experience undesirable health effects of NDL-PCBs. The public is advised to maintain a balanced and varied diet which includes a wide variety of fruit and vegetables so as to avoid excessive exposure to any contaminants from a small range of food items. As fish contains many essential nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids and high quality proteins, moderate consumption of a variety of fish is recommended.
