U.S. Codex Program Strategic Plan FY2019-2023

The U.S. Codex Office is finalizing the U.S. Codex Program's FY2019-2023 Strategic Plan and is sponsoring a public meeting on Friday November 2, 2018 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. to provide briefing information and receive public comments on the Plan's Goals and Objectives. The public meeting will take place at the USDA in the Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue SW., Room 107-A, Washington, DC 20250.

  • Written comments may be offered at or after the meeting by November 6, 2018 to Sarah Lynch (sarah.lynch@osec.usda.gov).

Codex Committee on Processed Fruits and Vegetables (CCPFV)

Matters referred on Methods of Analysis and Sampling: CCPFV invites Members and Observers to join an eWG, chaired by the United States, working in English, to develop responses to matters referred from the Codex Committee of Methods of Analysis and Sampling (CCMAS) (See CL 2018/22-PFV, para 9). Individuals in the U.S. interested in working on the U.S. contributions to the eWG should contact Doreen Chen-Moulec (doreen.chenmoulec@osec.usda.gov) by November 3, 2018. Other Members and Observers should send their full contact details, including participant's name, official title or position, organization or country, and email address to their Codex Contact Point with a copy to richard.peterson@ams.usda.gov, uscodex@osec.usda.gov, and dorian.lafond@ams.usda.gov by November 6, 2018. Note that when there is more than one expert, each country or Observer Organization shall designate one as the official representative to participate in the eWG.

Sunflowerseed Oils: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/78/OCS-CCFO) requesting comments at Step 3 on the Proposed Draft Revision of the Standard for Named Vegetable Oils (CODEX STAN 210-1999): Revision of the definitions of Sunflowerseed oils and the limits of Oleic and Linoleic acids in Sunflowerseed oils. Codex members and observers are invited to pay attention to the conclusion of the report of the EWG and to assist the 26th Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO26) in progressing this work. NRV-NCD for EPA and HFA Long Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/66/OCS-NFSDU) requesting comments on the proposed draft NRV-NCD for EPA and DHA long chain omega-3 fatty acids. Codex Members and Observers are invited to submit comments on the recommendations 1-4. TFAMR

Guidelines on Integrated Surveillance of Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance: The Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/75-OCS-AMR) requesting comments at Step 3 on the proposed draft Guidelines for the integrated monitoring and surveillance of foodborne antimicrobial resistance. Codex Members and Observers are invited to pay attention to the conclusions and recommendations of the report of the Electronic Working Group (eWG) to assist the 5th Session of the Ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance (TFAMR05) in progressing this work in particular as to those sections that need further development in the Guidelines. In addition, for section 7.3 of CX/AMR 18/6/6 the following is requested on:

  • General comments on the proposed stepwise approach for the establishment of an integrated monitoring and surveillance of foodborne AMR.
  • General comments for each of the components i.e. AMR, AMU and Analysis/Reporting.
  • General comments on the programs A, B and C of each of the components, in particular whether they fit the different situations of countries' capabilities to develop programs for integrated monitoring and surveillance of foodborne AMR.

Calls for Data

JMPR Calls for Data: The Joint FAO/WHO Meetings on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) invites Codex Members and Observers interested in the work of the Codex Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR) to submit data for two meetings of JMPR that will take place in 2019 to make progress on the recommendations for new and revised maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides for consideration by CCPR in 2020. Emerging Issues/Future Work: This is a reminder that the Codex Secretariat has issued a Circular Letter (CL 2018/49-FL) requesting comments on emerging issues relevant to the work of CCFL. In identifying emerging issues, Members are requested to keep in view the issues identified for consideration as future work in the last session of the Committee and to indicate whether the emerging issue, if taken up as new work proposal, would likely lead to preparation of a new standard/guideline or revision of an existing standard/guideline.
