• Break out from vacuole
• Propagate in cell
• Cell secretes cytokines
• Cytokines attract PMN
• PMN opens up tight junctions between enterocytes
• Damage enterocyte layer
• Shiga toxin from Shigella gets into blood
• Damage blood vessels
• Blood diarrhea and systemic symptoms
